scripts for illustrator object area

http://blog.k8baldwin.com/Finding-areas-and-lengths-in-Illustrator-td4.html

n.b. - the code for centimeter appears to place the decimal one point off. Recommend using both inches area calculation, crosschecked here: http://www.thecalculatorsite.com/conversions/area/square-inches-to-square-centimeters.php along with cm area script and compare answers for accurate calculation. This mightnt have to do with the code so much as the pixel resolution of the screen whereby the map calculates the internal area.

for reference, saving as scripts to be used in illustrator (name it AreaLength.JS):

inches: alert("Area & Length (inches)\nArea: " + (Math.abs(app.activeDocument.selection[0].area/5184).toFixed(3)) + "\nLength: " + (app.activeDocument.selection[0].length/72).toFixed(3));

cm: alert("Area & Length (centimeters)\nArea: " + (Math.abs(app.activeDocument.selection[0].area/80.3521617).toFixed(3)) + "\nLength: " + (app.activeDocument.selection[0].length/28.346567).toFixed(3));

Seamless Diagonal Pattern in Illustrator

(without adding as a swatch, can use this technique to create check / checked / checkered patterns for flags)

http://www.bittbox.com/illustrator/how-to-create-a-seamless-diagonal-pattern-in-illustrator

  1. Start with a “square” artboard.
  2. Create your vertical line.
  3. Align your shape to the top right corner
  4. Rotate 45 degrees
  5. Duplicate your shape and align it to the opposite corner.
  6. Make a Blend between the 2 shapes.
    1. Using the Blend tool click on 1 of your shapes, then immediately click on the other to make a blend. Then double click on the Blend tool, and you should see the ‘Blend Options” dialogue box. Set it to “Specified Steps” and then select a number, recommend making this an odd number.
  7. Expand your blend
  8. Create a square to crop with (size of artboard, aligned to artboard, for example)
    1. Align your square to the artboard
  9. Select all, then crop
  10. add this pattern as a Pattern Swatch: just select all, Edit> Define Pattern; will appear in your swatches palette
