faelish nobles were required by religion to autosacrifice. women were largely exempt as their bodies "naturally" are godlike and shed blood in accordance with cosmic monthly cycles. males on the other hand, in an ascending requirement up the social strata, had to find their own ways to appease the gods with the shedding of blood. a peasant working the ground sheds very little for instance, where as a leader of men in battle or a ruler of land has magnified responsibility, and his power makes him a focus of the gods, who therefore require more of him (blood)

perhaps british build something like this but cant imagine why. maybe an abandoned super fortress zone had been imagined for chofer plat but fell through. making a weird ring wall. // also note that cities are often walled (maybe faelish cities originally operated as oppida, hence the walling...where "modern" or non pre-washing sites do not have these. or also highland settlements. less like due to insufficient labor etc. anyway for the walls look to the cyprus ams map for example of legend/indication on map. --^--^--^-

democratic assemblies and IMPERATIVE MANDATE:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_democracy

the tradition of "atomic assemblies" where at the local village level, representatives are not elected, leadership is not elected, people generally agree to live amongst each other by certain rules which are agreed to. and yearly are grievances brought before the town. each one having its own system for introducing judges or trial. but basically these minimal assemblies AT MOST will send a "delegate" (more like a messenger) to tell larger assemblies or soviets wha tthey have resolved and what hte latest news from their part of the world is. and this is recorded but thats about it. at the national level, it is expected to seek protection and act as i a higher court of appeal. the idea of national codes of law are not historically present. if anything, corporate units operating in a string of towns must meet the needs of each town it operates in in turn and in unison. e.g. a company looking to build a pipeline. this frustrates much economic activity and growth, for sure. but it is the traditional aspect. it is most prevalent in the midlands, dhiall, valaduria. in places like lito and latin coast the representative style with free mandates is more common due to colonial influences. in valaduria this may have been a "resurgence" due to the oppression of such institutions for a long time by the spanish authorities. but these re-emerged as juntas and councils in both the great rebellion of 19th cent and 2nd civil war periods respectively.

"Putin's appointment is the culmination of the KGB's crusade for power. This is its finale. Now the KGB runs the country."[9] Olga Kryshtanovskaya, director of the Moscow-based Center for the Study of Elites, has found that up to 78% of 1,016 leading political figures in Russia have served previously in organizations affiliated with the KGB or FSB.[10] She said: "If in the Soviet period and the first post-Soviet period, the KGB and FSB people were mainly involved in security issues, now half are still involved in security but the other half are involved in business, political parties, NGOs, regional governments, even culture... They started to use all political institutions.

"Much of the land was poor and inaccessible and people lived in clans or tribes, who operated a system of mutual loyalty, called ‘duathches’, based on the allocation of land and controlled by the clan chieftain. In return for the land to live on, clansmen not only had to give over a proportion of their produce to the chieftain, they were also expected to join the local militia in any conflicts with neighbouring clans. The ‘clansmen’ were largely subsistence farmers, but their livelihood was increasingly threatened by sheep farming, which was less labour intensive and used more land. Some of the clans kept cattle, which were driven south for sale in the autumn."

the above relates to.....idk. i guess general interaction between midlanders and mountain folk.

From Perpetuity Engine My own analysis is that one needs to fathom the discrete differences between identity and nationality. The two are often conflated but they are distinct and unique. The concept of nationality is relatively new, and emerges with the rise of the nation-state roughly 3-5 hundred years ago. It is artificial and political.

There is an older concept that is linked to culture, and further back even than that, to tribal identity, what in modern terms might be called social identity. Most primates, like us, social animals, with strong territorial links fight for territory. For a place to eat and sleep and make our homes. When there is a fight for leadership of the tribe, the defeated side goes off and starts a new tribe somewhere else.

Humans, of course, play this game too. It is hardwired and carried inside each of us. That sense is older and more real than the nationalities that surround us. Which, in the case of Europe, has changed a thousand times.

had a thought that language is the imperial mode these days. language is culture. mode of thought. consume all modes into your own, you can carry it….like the US did the UKs empire. Just sorta, took over from paw..

interesting that in reproducing images again and again, the picts make themselves into a "culture". sort of make all individualism appear only as instances of a collective hive awareness, not unlike how we would think of bees. we would be the drones in this case. artistic angst and struggle would be in fact that you have to prove yourself to the hive for questioning the very composition of society's music. bold moves indeed.

"Convince the bad guys to be good," begs the Christian. But what if the bad guy accepts the word?

Constantine here reminds one of "that guy from britain who went on to be all the roman he could be." and he had a real ace up his sleeve, too. he convinced everyone he had a new god for rome. but what emperor hadn't pulled that one at one time or another?

if the existing documents we have are what's left after who knows how many forgeries and holocausts, what can we surmise? he with the greatest history, wins.

In calling the Irish sea- North sea- Baltic sea connection an "other mediterranean" i wouldn't mean to provoke, only point out the vibrance of another corner of the world that actually won but yet is ignored, in cultural terms that are reference points we can grasp (as philologists, I guess.).

At any rate the concept with these Other Mediterraneans is to…reorient maps. Try to signal a degree of change in perspective…

The lesson is that we look at these texts and see them as primitive accounts. like some dung-smeared page with a reed pen and parchment scratching accounts of battle scenes but the reality is no. the common account mustve been as it is now, common enough. what seems fabulously wealthy attainable only is possibly due only to the fact that they were rare but yet not uncommon. simply expensive and thus limited in comparison to other more perishable modes of communication. then as now. hence cell phones are so cheap. and yet we trust them so much. therein is the problem not some newfound unknown in products, as though products can come before us their creators. no. only an inability to properly school oneself through regimented practice is the fault in the process.

at any rate the point is that this is the most dumbed down account possible. that we rely on like buried treasure. now… what do you see in your common day, which is filled with literature of varying pedigrees, of similar syle and so on to the aforementioned? it will be the pulp trash newspapers. now consider how misread their language is today, and assume that all metaphors and references are unknown to the reader. do you see how abject and utterly spaced out language becomes from anyone even a degree removed, let alone removed in time and space as well….

All words become nothing more than the trickling of waters over rocks, atoms over nothings, over time, into whatever, and here we are….still some tribal thing worming its way in a cosmic understanding of what it is to be a colon parasite….

Its funny to see this professor and know he is professing into a machine. a camera. as though we acknowledge it is better to tell the machines than ourselves what we know is the true word. or at least our wisdom as we understand it. we start regurgitating our language to the things we create rather than that which we cohabitate with. a strange and pygmalionic change of devotion.

Picts were wiped out in face of Gaels? Wait. Another people? How did I not see this. OK so they were Welsh or Brithonic or some shit.

There was a new time. A changing of the guard, when the King of Galloway had to confess he was as they said outside, the lord only, of galway.

From Perpetuity Engine ill say this about my definition of “perfect” medieval society: if we all have one thing to believe in, then we are equal before that faith.

you can make anything a valid idea by putting an ism at the end. therefore any random idea can be made a proper theory. spectrumism: the full range of human emotions at play, as in non-christianized societies which do not restrict morality to a code.

it is nefas to lie, so faels tell better truths

unlike newfoundland which had a lot of pirate presence, faeland, in contrast, didn’t precisely because pirates had developed their own sea biors. pirates by many standards, they were nevertheless the political authority in their locales over many generations. their principal business was raid and plunder but within their terrestrial limits they were the authority by virtue of violence.to this day dartraig and the gal weal are fiercely underdeveloped places where personal “industry” is considered the norm. thus, many are still small landowners or fishermen. the primary candidates for stewardship of authority positions in these places are typically the commanders of the boat brigades which patrol the harbors; the police, in any other realm.

the six colonies period: the french were successful but the treaty of utrecht ceded all but argentau. this evolved into a long standing question as argentau was the last technically colonial possession not i sland. so the French Question was do we accept these obviously french into our own as the faels or do we eradicate them or do we let a single cyst of colonialism remain intact and ultimately sacrosanct amongst ourselves the rightful inhabitants? a camp of outsiders! what to do? so ultimately was the decision to call him a lord here, inviolate, unbidden to even the faelish lord, a micro kingdom, completely divested f loyalty to any french overlord. a pocket of je ne ce quois in the midst of it all. a little bit of influence but nothing guaranteed. and thus it became a foral.

Hümrac - holy warriors who often formed and fought in bands. Native to the Aoláin Foothills, they were in constant readiness to protect their forests and crags from the Gaevulg horsemen and Clough raiders. Leg was an allied kingdom of lowlanders. To this day many of the stronghold baronies of the Hümrac are under crown protection as commons, never having been subdued by larger neighbors. the Hümrac originated as men who swore themselves to warrior lives, and as a complement and justification for their life dedicated to war, they eschewed all things of this world, to give them no pretext for fighting. Typically they devoted themselves to learning about the gods, healing techniques, others simply read or did nothing but train— but the manifestation of this idea was essentially lordless swordsmen.

in later times they coalesced into bands out of necessity, and often the leaders of these bands would emerge as a conduit between the locals being protected and the humrac. although never given political power explicitly, they were the most common avatar of might and sanctity (besides other priests and the like) whose status made them the local authority as far as other nations were concerned. They rarely appointed delegates, if ever, or deputies vested with any of their authority. their politics was to maintain a sense of authority among their brethren humrac, their holiness, so to speak, and thus they mingled as little as possible with the mayors of the villages and farmers collectives within their territories of protection. the kings of Láeg, out of expediency, would deal with them when talking of the movements of the horser kingdoms outlying. as warriors their primary weapon was the sword and hand to hand combat. archery was only rarely evident among them as it was an art unto itself. However, the use of the crossbow, being an arm much more easily mastered, was often employed in bands at war.

the humrac revered the horse as a great power, since it carried men to heights of battle and thus pride, and were known to make effort to spare horses the slaughter of combat in battle. during the war of independence however the hurrah were known to target the modern equivalent (at that time): armored cars— the precursors to tanks. they believed that these stole power from the horses and lent unnecessary brutality and reckless bloodshed to war by hiding men from the fight.

In contemporary politics, the Hümrac has become a complicated relic, as modern sensibility would have the humrac “normalized” into some sort of police force; and most of the brothers still consider themselves ascetic warrior hermits. The local populations too are resistant to the national pressure of outside opinion to force them into having what they call “jackboots” ready to intimidate, nay, whose job it is to intimidate by law.

Some Humrac purposely make themselves scarce, going deep into the upland forests and avoiding contact. Wandering laws allow this. By not getting involved they avoid the modern conundrum. Others, however, maintain their position is to interact with the world and spread their wisdom about the gods and the stories. As well as to protect, as they have always done. Typically they respond to media by saying “we will always come to the help of those in need. I don’t know if these people want a police force. That is for them to decide.”

Typically, the cases which cause the dilemmas involve outsiders and outside agencies who do not know how to interact with such a simple, unbureaucratic system. These rise to the top and are settled in higher courts and there is a media fuss but, constitutionally, no one crown vassal can interfere with the internal mechanisms of its neighbors. Tradition abides.

Although not required by law to present themselves to the (council), they are indeed lesser deins, in the case of the commons of faeland remaining humrac. and the king has always treated them especially. Offering them as their right as warriors to sit in the hall with their equals across the island, but respecting their holy duties to the gods, which might excuse them. Effectively this guarantees the local justice system royal patronage.

A lot of the Humrac cluster baronies have been turned over to sheep herding. The humrac and the locals interact often and in day to day terms they are seen more like park rangers or stewards of the forests, as well as being respected holy men. They have kept out offenders of the local population such as agribusinesses (English types…corporations and the like.. one old lady called them (cite newspaper)) that looked to industrialize the region’s ranches in the 1960s.

Interestingly, because the Humrac are self-appointed and their leaders arise spontaneously, and govern where they will, so to speak, the boundaries of the humrac cluster are any given moment in flux. Theoretically, they don’t exist, as no humrac wars on another for territory or control. But stories tell of people in the domain of one humrac appealing to another for his justice, which they thought uniquely suited for their case and it is not uncommon. On maps, the boundaries are typically indicated by township and ranches or ranch collectives.

during the demesne period, after the fall of king __ their technical overlords became the dukes of faeland, and ultimately of course, the monarch of the british. in order to save themselves from annihilation by the english armies, the brethren decided to allow their technical fealty status to be levied against them - they called this living fighting, or martyrdom-slavery, as it represented their protection of those not conscripted. enrolled thus into the dukes army, they were typically formed into their own small units of light infantry tasked primarily with scouting duties. it was thought that it was dangerous to use men so skilled in the forests of their own country unless employed out-of-country. so, they were often hired out to the british empire at large, typically in india, which also sent military units to faeland. this situation lasted throughout the era of occupation.

at the outset of the war of independence, the humrac determined to desert their british obligations and return to their ancestral forests and ranges to protect their people. they immediately swore loyalty to the king of faeland (remember this was while many republicans were about) and made it public that they would protect their homelands from occupiers, but could not do so by fighting “abroad”, i.e. forming a unit and marching off to war against the british. Some saw this as a betrayal but the humrac maintained that it was the british that first forced them off their lands and exploited their people (the locals under the grand union of faeland were within the jurisdiction of the ____ and were taxed and conscripted into plantation style ranching projects continuously, as well as foresting operations against the sacred forests of the humrac) and that they were not keen to die for the same. thus it was determined that the humrac baros, or baronies, as outsiders called them, were to be one of the most secure hard points of the independence struggle. military leaders of the fight knew the land would not turn, and that the people and warriors there would fight to the death. throughout the war the theater was called the “Humrac Line” and considered it entrenched, well-defended territory with professionally trained military protection, not partisan territory. Offensives toward Lito and the Great Faelish Plain could stage from the flanks or in the valleys behind their territory and know they were protected. As heartland enemy territory, the redcoats never sent an army against the area but did attempt artillery bombardments. Without massive targets these were ineffective, and most shelling accomplished little damage as the guns were aimed at the trees wherein the brits thought the brethren were dug in like infantry. truthfully most had simply begun wandering the forests with machine guns, rifles, pistols, and their traditional swords.

when a king finally was declared, the humrac treated the occasion as a matter of course of faelish independence. there always had been and there always would be, it was the british who usurped the title, and now that they were expelled, a new king was right and justly to be made. at any rate as gratitude for their service, the same pre-colonial right was extended to the humrac brethren, the invitation to the hall but no requirements at court. by fading into military obscurity they have achieved dubious media fame and an awkward political notoriety.

famed throughout faeland for millennia, they were once more widespread although known by many names the further one travelled from the aolains. the almuhr have their own breed of such, as do other ranges of highlanders. they had peculiarities of speech which marked them out from these, such as when a new brother was generally accepted by the group, he would typically be referred to as “my sword” or “our new sword has come”. this is taken to mean that the men consider themselves men of the sword, and one with theirs individually, as though one and the same. as protectors and guardians of the gods way (see cahn/old way vianism). and although referred to as brethren or brotherhood in english (sometimes priesthood or order), in their own language the literal translation of the humrac collective pronoun, ——, is “rope”. they consider themselves threads that create a rope to valhalla of sorts, to the god-world, a spirit realm which permeates us but, alas, is not visible, but very much affected by and affecting this world, our world, which they call in their dialect, literally “hardness”. An adjective. Some call this materialist and others fatalist, but the humrac respond that they never judge this world, it is not on their agenda. only to know the gods and protect non-warriors. by this account have they become noble.

but i digress, the principle export in language has been the referral by peers to one another typically by the style sword. My sword is a common example in Faelish English which typically calques words it translates rather than use English equivalents of rank. My sword is rendered most often at the rank of baron and below, many higher ranks preferring such foreign imports as “my lord”, but it is considered a great honor to be called thus, and almost universally the crown uses the expression when referring to any member of the nobility, as Faels believe it harkens down to the most basic and sacred duty of protection, not just to one’s lord but in the general sphere of one’s influence. Naturally this is a different interpretation than the humrac’s divine conduit/armed porter view. But nevertheless the expression in modern faelish english does carry many overtones of sanctity and a divinely bonded obligation.

in modern times, the brothers have made a small business out of their smithing and metallurgic talents making swords for collectors and the Common Defense’s officer corps. Centuries of practice making their own from mining to polishing has made them expert artisans with exceptional skill at working metals to their utmost potential depending on their source. For instance certain mines produce certain types of swords and others others, because experience has shown them which hardnesses are best for what purpose. there is a legend that the humrac possess a formula to make the ‘sword of _____’, a fabulous blade which will bestow godlike power, but to date the humrac refuse to answer any questions about it. rumors persist that a faelish king will one day be gifted with such an edge, however. part of the faelish matter.

no one is sure how this convention was established. perhaps the man that set the original tables such as they were was a lefty. nevertheless, the convention established, it came to evolve that the most prominent man at each bench was deferred to the pen. and naturally, its anterior pole the paper was seen to designate the least ranker on that particular bench. and so it went up through the benches to the frontmost and dais-most. and that of the left hand bench closest yet, out of nature being at the right most of the throne, so to speak.

among these, it was said, became the most propitious the lefties, who could compose their conceits and yet conceal them in concert. whereas righties were perforce required to reveal their writings to their majesties.

thus was perpetuated that the leftmost is the right-most, as faelish custom conveys.

  • non-european portraits, incl replacing existing eg history page, also consider no money for fancy artists and less euro style clothing. drawings over portraits. sketches even. the whole island should just have less resources.
  • isolationist-post revolutionary govt...a la de francia in paraguay. or maybe after the reb of 18##. or maybe during struggles till 55 and sublime edict with goal of not natl school in native lang but ban on education in english. we could say there is a revolutionary nationalist group looking oust criollo but by dawn of wwii perhaps the more moderate old noble classes win ground securing american help in exchange for a grand airbase at future cathir na fil. nevertheless as revolutionary nationalism subsides its biggest supporters and amnestied proponents are in highlands and the west. revolutionary strong man like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Paraguay#Francia,_1814–40 who gains power over territories during rev and civil war. possibly on the republican side. despite defeat, most of his (or her) actions upheld, although perhaps embedded into society in more grassroots ways.

From Perpetuity Engine bokonist federal govt....meanwhile the empery is like a shadow govt. operating underneath but in open opposition to the supra gov. and, to more and less degrees, the emery has enlisted some other member states into its coterie. there was a book (cats cradle) which predicted this absurdist but practical political situation and then slowly but surely it happened

evolving a black market economy as well that while apparently disadvantaging people in fact provides a means to a popularly controlled economy of pure market, not financialist control

the federal directory has been accused many times of colluding with the atlantic powers and attempting to secure neo liberal financial late capitalism in the isles.
