From its beginnings, Faelish vocabulary was influenced by its contact with Celtic, Latin and other related Germanic and Romance languages and later absorbed many words during the British presence in the Faelish islands. The Faelish language also adopted many words from Vhaetalic languages, particularly by the process known as "academic recovery", as well as adding its own new words constructed from the same sources.
